स्पष्ट (विवरण) प्रश्न पूछते हैं कि गद्यांश सीधे क्या कहता है: 'According to the passage…', 'The passage states that…', 'Which of the following is true/NOT true…'।
जाल 3, अतिवादी शब्द: जब गद्यांश 'often', 'many' या 'some' कहता है, तब 'always', 'all', 'never', 'only', 'completely' सही कथन को गलत बना देते हैं।
Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi were once the main grains eaten in large parts of India. After the 1960s, government support for rice and wheat led farmers to shift away from them. Millets need far less water than rice and can grow in poor soil, which makes them suited to dry regions. Ragi in particular is rich in calcium. In recent years, rising cases of diabetes have renewed interest in millets, because they release sugar into the blood more slowly than polished rice.
According to the passage, why did farmers shift away from millets after the 1960s?
वाक्य कहता है 'government support for rice and wheat led farmers to shift away from them'।
Because the government supported rice and wheat
Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi were once the main grains eaten in large parts of India. After the 1960s, government support for rice and wheat led farmers to shift away from them. Millets need far less water than rice and can grow in poor soil, which makes them suited to dry regions. Ragi in particular is rich in calcium. In recent years, rising cases of diabetes have renewed interest in millets, because they release sugar into the blood more slowly than polished rice.
Which millet does the passage single out as rich in calcium?
हल: 'calcium' खोजें। वाक्य है 'Ragi in particular is rich in calcium.'
Ragi.
उदाहरण 3: Paraphrase मिलाना
Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi were once the main grains eaten in large parts of India. After the 1960s, government support for rice and wheat led farmers to shift away from them. Millets need far less water than rice and can grow in poor soil, which makes them suited to dry regions. Ragi in particular is rich in calcium. In recent years, rising cases of diabetes have renewed interest in millets, because they release sugar into the blood more slowly than polished rice.
प्रश्न: इनमें से कौन-सा कथन गद्यांश से मेल खाता है: 'Millets suit dry regions because they need little water and tolerate poor soil' या 'Millets suit dry regions because they are rich in calcium'?
हल: गद्यांश 'which makes them' द्वारा 'suited to dry regions' को 'far less water' और 'poor soil' से जोड़ता है।
उदाहरण 4: NOT stated प्रश्न
Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi were once the main grains eaten in large parts of India. After the 1960s, government support for rice and wheat led farmers to shift away from them. Millets need far less water than rice and can grow in poor soil, which makes them suited to dry regions. Ragi in particular is rich in calcium. In recent years, rising cases of diabetes have renewed interest in millets, because they release sugar into the blood more slowly than polished rice.
Which of the following is NOT stated in the passage? (a) Millets need less water than rice. (b) Ragi is rich in calcium. (c) Millets give higher yields per acre than wheat. (d) Millets release sugar into the blood more slowly than polished rice.
In 1998, 40 women in a village in north Gujarat formed a milk cooperative. At first, each member brought about 2 litres a day, and the cooperative sold the milk to a private dealer who often paid late. In 2004 the cooperative bought its own chilling unit with a bank loan. This allowed it to store milk safely and sell directly to a large dairy, which paid every 10 days. By 2015 the cooperative had 300 members, and the loan had been fully repaid.
According to the passage, what was the direct result of buying the chilling unit? (a) Membership rose to 300. (b) The cooperative could store milk safely and sell directly to a large dairy. (c) The bank loan was fully repaid. (d) Each member began to bring more than 2 litres a day.
हल: खरीद के बाद वाला वाक्य 'This allowed it to…'
In 1998, 40 women in a village in north Gujarat formed a milk cooperative.
Which of the following is true according to the passage? (a) The private dealer paid every 10 days. (b) The cooperative was formed with a bank loan in 1998. (c) The cooperative had repaid its loan by 2015. (d) The large dairy bought the cooperative's milk from 1998 onwards.
(c) अंतिम वाक्य से मेल खाता है: 'By 2015… the loan had been fully repaid.'
अतिवादी शब्द स्वीकार करना: 'Millets are the only crop suited to dry regions' का समर्थन 'suited to dry regions' से नहीं होता।
Q1. The town library opens at 8 am on weekdays and at 10 am on Sundays. Members may borrow 3 books at a time for 14 days; newspapers cannot be taken home. Which is true according to the passage? (a) The library opens at 8 am on Sundays. (b) Members may borrow newspapers for 14 days. (c) Members may borrow 3 books at a time. (d) The library is closed on Sundays.
Q2. Neem trees are being planted along the new highway because they tolerate heat and need little water once established. The forest department waters each sapling for its first 2 summers. Why are neem trees planted along the highway? (a) They grow faster than other trees. (b) They tolerate heat and need little water once established. (c) They need watering every summer. (d) The forest department gets them free.
Q3. Anil left Patna at 6 am by bus and reached Gaya at 9 am. He then took a shared auto to Bodh Gaya, where he spent the afternoon at the temple. Which is NOT stated? (a) Anil travelled from Patna by bus. (b) Anil reached Gaya at 9 am. (c) Anil returned to Patna the same evening. (d) Anil spent the afternoon at the temple.
NOT/EXCEPT
अनुमान वाले प्रश्नों में 'implies', 'suggests', 'can be inferred', 'the author would most likely agree' जैसे शब्द होते हैं।
Every morning, the old postman of Rampur walked 12 kilometres to deliver letters to 3 villages. He knew every family by name and often read letters aloud to those who could not read. When the post office installed a computer last year, he was given a tablet to record deliveries. He still carries his old leather bag, though it is now mostly empty, since few people write letters any more.
What can be inferred about the postman's relationship with the villagers?
He was close to them and trusted by them
Every morning, the old postman of Rampur walked 12 kilometres to deliver letters to 3 villages. He knew every family by name and often read letters aloud to those who could not read. When the post office installed a computer last year, he was given a tablet to record deliveries. He still carries his old leather bag, though it is now mostly empty, since few people write letters any more.
Which word best describes the writer's tone towards the postman: critical, affectionate or sarcastic?
Every morning, the old postman of Rampur walked 12 kilometres to deliver letters to 3 villages. He knew every family by name and often read letters aloud to those who could not read. When the post office installed a computer last year, he was given a tablet to record deliveries. He still carries his old leather bag, though it is now mostly empty, since few people write letters any more.
Why does the writer mention that the old leather bag is 'now mostly empty'?
To show that letter-writing has declined while he holds on to his old ways
Some city planners argue that building wider roads will end traffic jams. Experience suggests otherwise. Within a few years of a road being widened, more people buy cars and use it, and the jams return. Cities that have improved buses and metro lines, on the other hand, have seen fewer cars on their roads. Wider roads, it seems, invite the very traffic they were meant to remove.
The author's attitude towards widening roads to end traffic jams is (a) enthusiastic (b) sceptical (c) indifferent (d) humorous
हल: 'Experience suggests otherwise' और 'invite the very traffic they were meant to remove' दिखाते हैं कि लेखक इस विचार पर संदेह करता है।
Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? (a) Cities should stop building roads altogether. (b) City planners never study traffic data. (c) Metro lines are cheaper to build than roads. (d) Better public transport can reduce the number of cars on roads.
(d) 'on the other hand' वाले विरोध से निकलता है: जिन शहरों ने बस और मेट्रो सुधारी उनमें कारें कम हुईं।
The last sentence ('Wider roads, it seems, invite the very traffic they were meant to remove') mainly serves to (a) give statistical evidence (b) praise city planners (c) sum up the irony at the heart of the argument (d) introduce a new argument
व्यंग्य न पहचानना: तथ्यों से मेल न खाती प्रशंसा ('a brilliant flyover that cracked in a month') उपहास है, प्रशंसा नहीं।
Q1. Meena looked at the dark sky, took the washing off the line and brought her goats into the shed before the first drops fell. It can be inferred that (a) Meena expected rain. (b) Meena disliked her goats. (c) It rained for many days. (d) Meena had no shed.
Q2. The 'modern' flyover, opened with great fanfare last month, has already developed 3 cracks; one can only admire the speed at which our engineers work. The tone of the passage is (a) admiring (b) sarcastic (c) neutral (d) nostalgic
Q3. Libraries are not just stores of books. In many small towns, they are the only quiet, free places where students can study for hours, and where poor families can read newspapers without paying. The main purpose of the passage is to (a) criticise libraries (b) describe how books are stored (c) show that libraries serve needs beyond lending books (d) ask for higher library fees
Q1. (a) अंधेरा आसमान देखना और 'before the first drops fell' कपड़े व बकरियां सुरक्षित करना दिखाता है कि उसे बारिश की आशा थी।
Q3. (c) 'Not just stores of books'
विषय बनाम मुख्य विचार: विषय 1 या 2 शब्दों में होता है ('mangroves'); मुख्य विचार यह है कि गद्यांश उसके बारे में क्या कहता है ('mangroves protect coasts and fisheries but are being destroyed')।
बहुत व्यापक: ऐसा विकल्प जो गद्यांश की चर्चा से बड़ा क्षेत्र समेटता है ('Coastal ecosystems of the world')।
Mangroves grow where rivers meet the sea. Their tangled roots hold soil in place and slow down storm waves, protecting villages on the coast. They also serve as nurseries for many kinds of fish, which keeps local fishermen in business. Yet large areas of mangroves have been cleared for fish farms and ports.
Mangroves protect coasts and support fishing, yet they are being cleared
Mangroves grow where rivers meet the sea. Their tangled roots hold soil in place and slow down storm waves, protecting villages on the coast. They also serve as nurseries for many kinds of fish, which keeps local fishermen in business. Yet large areas of mangroves have been cleared for fish farms and ports.
Which is the better title: 'Mangroves: Coastal Guardians Under Threat' or 'How Fish Breed'?
Mangroves: Coastal Guardians Under Threat.
प्रश्न: इन शीर्षकों पर संकीर्ण, व्यापक या सही का लेबल लगाएं: 'Fish Farms in India', 'Coastal Ecosystems of the World', 'Why Mangroves Matter and Why They Are Vanishing'।
'Coastal Ecosystems of the World' मैंग्रोव से बहुत आगे जाता है, इसलिए बहुत व्यापक है।
Many parents worry that children no longer read. Surveys show, however, that children are reading more than ever; only the form has changed. They read on phones, follow comics online and search for information on their own. The challenge for schools is not to make children read, but to help them read deeply and judge what they read.
Which best expresses the main idea? (a) Children today do not read at all. (b) Phones are harmful for children. (c) Children read a lot in new forms, and schools must teach them to read deeply and critically. (d) Comics are better than books.
Many parents worry that children no longer read. Surveys show, however, that children are reading more than ever; only the form has changed. They read on phones, follow comics online and search for information on their own. The challenge for schools is not to make children read, but to help them read deeply and judge what they read.
The most suitable title is (a) The Death of Reading (b) Reading in a New Age: From More to Deeper (c) Phones in Classrooms (d) Why Parents Worry
Every winter, smoke from burning crop stubble adds to the haze over north Indian cities. Farmers burn the stubble because the gap between the rice harvest and wheat sowing is only 2 or 3 weeks, and clearing it by machine costs money. Where machines that cut and spread the stubble have been provided at low rent, burning has fallen. Paying farmers to sell stubble to power plants has also helped in some districts.
Which best states the main idea? (a) Stubble burning has economic causes, and affordable alternatives can reduce it. (b) Smoke from stubble is the only cause of winter haze. (c) Farmers burn stubble out of carelessness. (d) Power plants are the main users of crop waste.
उत्तर: (a).

RC शब्दावली प्रश्न पूछते हैं 'the word X as used in the passage means…'
शब्द के आसपास के संदर्भ-संकेत: comma या dash के बाद परिभाषा; उदाहरण ('such as'); विरोध ('unlike', 'usually… but'); कारण या परिणाम ('so opaque that even experts struggle')।
The doctor's report was grave; the patient would need surgery within the week.
The young scientist's novel approach to storing solar power surprised the judges, who had seen nothing like it before.
संकेत 'had seen nothing like it before' अर्थ देता है।
उत्तर: new and original (नया और मौलिक)।
The committee will champion the cause of street vendors and press the city to give them licensed spaces.
समानांतर कार्य 'press the city to give them licensed spaces' सक्रिय सार्वजनिक समर्थन दिखाता है।
उत्तर: support and fight for (समर्थन करना और उसके लिए लड़ना)।
The new tax rules are so opaque that even experienced accountants struggle to understand what is required.
The word 'opaque' as used in the passage means (a) not letting light through (b) difficult to understand (c) strict (d) temporary
हल: परिणाम-उपवाक्य 'so… that even experienced accountants struggle to understand' अर्थ स्पष्ट करता है।
At the meeting, the usually reticent clerk surprised everyone by speaking at length about the problems in the office.
Choose the word most nearly OPPOSITE in meaning to 'reticent' as used in the passage. (a) shy (b) reserved (c) talkative (d) silent
हल: 'Usually reticent… surprised everyone by speaking at length' विरोध बनाता है: सामान्यतः वह कम बोलता है।
The minister tried to downplay the crisis, describing the shortage of medicines in district hospitals as a minor hiccup, even as patients were being turned away.
The word 'downplay' as used in the passage most nearly means (a) exaggerate (b) investigate (c) postpone (d) make something seem less important than it is
'Even as patients were being turned away' दिखाता है कि उसका वर्णन वास्तविकता से छोटा था।
(a) ठीक विपरीत है, और (b) तथा (c) 'describing… as a minor hiccup' से मेल नहीं खाते।

Q1. (b) 'Despite losing' के साथ 'laughing and already planning' उत्साह दिखाते हैं।
Q2. (a) 'Admitting even the mistakes he had made himself' खुली ईमानदारी दिखाता है, जो 'frank' है।
संकेत खोजें: परिभाषा, उदाहरण, विरोध ('usually… but'), या परिणाम ('so… that')।
