    How to study Sociology OptionalShow

    What UPSC asks most

Optional Papers I and II (250 marks each): sociological theory, methods and thinkers (Paper I), Indian society, its structure and change (Paper II).

    Traps to avoid

    • Writing general essays without naming thinkers, concepts and studies.
    • Quoting old data; give figures with their year and source (Census, NFHS, NCRB, PLFS).

    How to study it here

    1. Read one chapter, then write two of its past questions under time and compare with the model answers.
    2. Use Indian examples in Paper I answers and theory (Ghurye, Srinivas, Dumont, Desai) in Paper II answers.

Mains: Optional: define the concept with its thinker, explain the theory and its criticism, apply it to India with a study or current data, and end with a balanced judgement.
